We awake to a gloomy, cold, and rainy morning on the water. No major storms or anything. Just a consistent chilly light rain that permeated everything. The icing on the cake was the bugs. They’re still here and seem to be getting stronger!
Breakfast was on the boat this morning and we pulled up anchor around 10am EST. There was no wind to be had anywhere along our 16 mile trip south. We thought that we may have had enough sustainable wind about a third of our way in. But, unfortunately right after we killed the engine and unfurled the genoa, the wind died off and we would have only made progress at about 2 knts. So, it was unfortunately another day of motoring to our destination. Very disappointing!
The marina in Traverse City is nothing special. But the people were very friendly and they had hot showers and laundry. Thusly, I spent most of my afternoon doing laundry and taking a very long-hot shower. I even got to shave for the first time since our departure last Friday. It was beginning to look a little rough. I’m still debating what the future of the bearded look will be when we break away from civilization and get into parts of Canada…
One of the sailing couples we met in Suttons Bay (Jim & Sandy) recommended that we check out a restaurant in downtown Traverse City called Amical. Boy, are we glad that we did! The food, service, and atmosphere was fantastic. This was a restaurant with a true professional staff that knew what they were doing in and out of the kitchen. My dad and I both had the braised pork shank with goat cheese mashed potatoes and local asparagus. Pair that with a great glass of wine and hand-crafted dessert; amazing! We’re debating returning tomorrow. It was that good.
It’s still quite rainy and cold here. I think that I’ll turn in early tonight. We have a number of things to accomplish tomorrow on the boat. Plus, a potential 3 mile hike to West Marine if the weather cooperates.
Sounds like an interesting trip so far. You made me hungry describing last nights meal. I am really happy that the two of you are spending the new adventure together. What a lifetime experience. Too bad the weather is so cold but sooner than you realize, the weather will warm up. I think a beard will look fabulous, Joey. I will look forward to pictures of it. Say hi to your dad and happy sailing!!! Suzie

When you and Niki are ready to leave your husbands, we’ll find room for you. But, you have to contribute, i.e. make meals, wash clothes, etc., while Joey and I sail the boat:-)). Thanks for the note.
